Heel Tough Blog: Heels Pick Up Commitment from 2020 4✮ S
While most of the media’s attention in college football will turn to the late signing period for the 2019 recruiting cycle on Friday, the Heels got some news on the 2020 class on just prior to that on Wednesday.
The Heels secured a commitment from a major in-state prospect in the class on Wednesday afternoon. That major prospect: 2020 4✮ S Cameron Roseman-Sinclair, who announced his commitment via Twitter following an initial report from Inside Carolina. Roseman-Sinclair recently finished up his junior season at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, NC, where he finished with 69 total tackles, including 4.0 tackles for loss and hauled in two interceptions while recording six pass deflections. To this point in his Myers Park career, Roseman-Sinclair has registered 122 career tackles, seven career interceptions and eleven pass deflections. Roseman-Sinclair will be one of the key defensive pieces that will return for a Myers Park team that went to the NCHSAA 4AA semifinals this season, but will have a lot of leadership to replace.
The question amongst the college football recruiting community is how Roseman-Sinclair’s recruitment changed so quickly. About a month ago, Virginia Tech seemed to have all but locked up his commitment, but Dre Bly’s hire seems to be the link to what changed everything. Bly, who was the DB’s coach for Myers Park when Roseman-Sinclair was a freshman and remained around the team for the last two seasons, came in with a goal, similar to Mack Brown, to quickly re-establish the Heels recruiting footprint in the Charlotte area, especially among defensive backs. One of his main focuses from the get go was getting Roseman-Sinclair to Chapel Hill and that prior relationship has helped him achieve that goal and relatively quickly.
So the real question is, what will Roseman-Sinclair be bring to this Tar Heel defense? While Roseman-Sinclair is listed as a safety, most of his tape from this season shows him as a 4–3 OLB that played a solid amount of snaps as a nickel corner. That role seems to fit his skill set well, considering the best part of his game is his tackling. While he may not blow anyone away with his speed or his ability to disengage from blocks, Roseman-Sinclair is smart and knows the correct angles to take to get runners on the ground when he’s out in space. It also helps that Roseman-Sinclair has the hard hitting tendencies that you love to see from an outside linebacker or in-the-box safety. While he may be tight in the hips, Roseman-Sinclair was able to handle his own when matched up on slot receivers, so his flexibility makes him an attractive option to Jay Bateman who loves those types of players in his defense.
With Roseman-Sinclair’s commitment, the Heels’ 2020 class moves from 51st overall up to 29th and goes from 9th in the ACC to 5th.
