Is Larry to Ole Miss a Possibility?

Just about three hours ago, it was announced that Hugh Freeze had resigned from his position as the head coach at the University of Mississippi after new information came out concerning the ongoing NCAA investigation. That leave a coaching vacancy in what most people consider the best conference in the country. Matt Luke has taken over as the interim head coach, but it is highly unlikely that he will become the permanent head coach. That means that Ole Miss will in search of a new head coach in the near future.

So who exactly tops that list? No one knows yet, but there is a good chance that Larry Fedora’s name will be right near the top. Why?

Well, first of all, Larry’s dealt with a situation similar to this before. This is almost the exact same situation that he entered when he came to Carolina, especially if he became their head coach after this season. That experience is valuable because coaches have to be able to handle that sort of rebuild.

Secondly, Larry’s success at Carolina makes him attractive. His 19–8 record over the past two seasons is a very strong record for what he’s had in place and with how much the defense has struggled. Success in conference play has been a positive too, as he has gone 13–3 in the ACC the last two season. His recruiting class are about on par with where Ole Miss is now and continues to improve as a recruiter.

Lastly, who else honestly is there. Lane Kiffin comes to mind, but him entering a chaotic situation doesn’t seem at all sensible. Someone such as Brent Venables or Joe Moorhead probably wouldn’t want this as a first head coaching job. Non-Power 5 options such as Scott Satterfield or Mike Norvell might get looks, but they’re not as attractive as Larry is.

Now let’s get one things straight: I AM NOT SAYING LARRY IS LEAVING. In fact, I find it highly unlikely that Larry leaves for Oxford. If the Rebels want him, though, they will be willing to paid a large amount. Still, Larry just signed an 8-year extension, so it would be shocking if he was to leave the Tar Pit for Hotty Toddy. With that being said, a little concern should be felt if you’re a Tar Heel fan.
