Introducing the HDL World Heavy Weight Title Belt
We all know about the Mug. Nothing can come close to the glory bestowed upon those select few who have won one. It’s what we all fight for. It’s what we dream about. Thinking about one has given me a full blown erection as I type this.
But what if there was something else worth fighting for. What if there were a trophy that was won not through a grueling season long 12 team battle royale, but between two individual competitors — one defending their right to keep the belt, and the other seeking to take it for their own.
Enter the HDL World Heavy Weight Title Belt.
The Belt (not to be confused with the physical belt we had in 2014) can only be held by one team at a time. You win the belt by taking it from the defending champion, the same as a boxer or a wrestler.
There’s no money or prizes for having it, only the glory of the belt and being able to have the icon next to your name on Slack.
As part of the introduction of the belt, I’ve gone back and tracked who has owned it since it was first handed out to Brett after winning the inaugeral championship in 2014. You’ll see since then it’s been owned by 7 different teams, with the longest reign being in 2015 by Cleve and the current Champion being…well, the current HDL Champions, Dave and Scott.
That also means each week there will be a match that means just a little bit more as the defending champion seeks to fend off everyone else’s grubby paws. This week it looks like Dave and Scott are primed to not only open the season with a win, but also defend the Belt against Troy. Would Troy have moved Zeke if he knew the price would be so high? We’ll never know for sure.
