The third annual Blockchain Public Day, organised by DB Systel, took place on the 18th of October 2019. Up in the 31th floor of the Silberturm, a well-known skyscraper in the heart of Frankfurt, blockchain and DLT experts from various industries and backgrounds came together. The location surpassed its expectations with a stunning view over the main and large parts of Frankfurt. The goal of the event was to present new and promising blockchain use cases and to foster a cross-sector discourse on current blockchain trends.

The Blockchain Crew of DB Systel showcased their projects during the day, while other thought-leaders of the blockchain industry also had the opportunity to present their project to the audience. Firstly, there were lectures on innovative mobility concepts based on blockchain technology, such as the presentation of the Mobility Blockchain Platform by Dr. Harry Behrens, Head of Blockchain Factory at Daimler Mobility AG (you can find more information on this project below). Also, the lecture by Prof. Dr. Nils Urbach, professor of business informatics and strategic IT management at the University of Bayreuth, on the opportunities of blockchain in mobility and logistics.

On the other hand, additional informative presentations found their way onto the agenda: Helge Michael, blockchain project manager at Main Incubator Commerzbank, showcased the prototype of an identity management system for self-sovereign identities — Project “Lissi”, short for “Let’s initiate Self-Sovereign Identity”. Franz von Weizsäcker, from the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), held a presentation on the interoperability and intermodality of blockchain technology, which was in particular interesting for tech-savvy participants.

All in all, the event provided the guests with a pleasant atmosphere and a great opportunity to network with like-minded people from the blockchain industry. At the event, every participant had the chance to address his or her questions directly to the speakers of the lectures while enjoying live music and drinks.

Mobility Blockchain Platform

The breakout sessions started in the early afternoon, Dr. Harry Behrens got started with the presentation of the Mobility Blockchain Platform. Daimler initiated the project in cooperation with four startups, including Riddle&Code, evan.network, 51nodes, and us.

The aim of the project is to offer an innovative platform for automated end-to-end fleet management and car rental services (Mobility as a Service — MaaS). The user is able to rent a car and directly pay the rental fee with just a few clicks. Providers of car-sharing services can handle a large number of users in a secure and efficient manner.

What’s special about the project is its open source nature and the concept of an open ecosystem. There won’t be a single monopoly provider, but many different providers offering their services on the platform. Healthy competition and a foundation for secure and automated transactions (based on the underlying blockchain infrastructure) promise to revolutionize mobility in urban areas.

The blockchain technology plays a crucial role for the automatic and secure processing of the users. In the words of Harry Behrens: “With Blockchain you can aggregate and control the supply and demand of vehicles. It can ensure that vehicles and services are available to end users when and where they want and bill them accordingly”.
