How Technology is Helping the Music & Entertainment Industry adapt the COVID 19 Pandemic!

The live music and concert industry accomplished strong growth in 2019, with direction for another great year in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic, postponing and cancelling music events and concerts, unleashing a destructive monetary impact.

Streaming platforms now bear an increased responsibility: With income from live music and concerts mostly shrunk to tips from webcasts, artists are progressively dependent on income from streaming platforms. Some platforms are offering direct or indirect financial support to the music community during these hard times.

A Swedish startup in online music and events streaming space has launched a platform “Muistream”, hosting virtual concerts for artists with an aim to bring artists closer to fans.

The App aims to create a platform for artists to share their music live with the users. Artists and users can register on the platform. The artists can create an Event and stream that live using OBS as the video content creation tool. The users can subscribe to the events and watch the event stream live.

Problems & Challenges

The main challenge faced was to choose a Live streaming framework which would help a very fast integration with reasonable pricing. Quite a few options were considered including the AWS Streaming services. However, it was the combination of faster integration and reasonable pricing of Wowza streaming services that made us choose them. It also helped that the Wowza streaming service internally uses AWS services and provides an easier-to-use wrapper on top of that. The other challenge was how to integrate the OBS software with our application.

Solutions

Using Wowza streaming services made it relatively easier to integrate with the base LAMP-stack based application. The main platform is developed with LAMP technologies and integrated with Wowza services with the integration framework provided by Wowza. Wowza platform also provided an easy-to-use API framework to integrate with the OBS software for seamless Live streaming.

Technology

This Application is built using the LAMP stack. For the UI, HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, and JavaScript is used. The backend is implemented using PHP and MySQL is used as the underlying database. The video streaming services from Wowza are integrated. The application is hosted on the AWS EC2 instance with AWS RDS used for the MySQL Relational Database.
