I’ve seen people pour blood sweat and tears into their projects and growing a company, myself included. If I’ve learned anything over the last decade after building, scaling, and selling my own digital agency (and now building Accelo), it’s that managing a growing business is oftentimes more painful than it needs to be.

Technology enables us to do a lot in our businesses, but it doesn’t always make it easier to stay on top of everything from one simple place. While we’ve got lots of tools do specialist jobs — sales tools, project tools, task tools, timesheet tools, billing tools, file sharing and collaboration tools and even email, calendar and address books — they don’t work together. This is why it is often harder to run a business now than it was a when we got a few letters and faxes a day instead of hundreds of emails.
Working hard is one thing, but when you’re growing your business these disconnects become dangerous. You’re landing bigger projects, hiring more staff, and don’t always have the transparency you need to see what’s coming in and what’s going out. Landing bigger projects means hiring more staff — costs you incur before you get paid, so if a project runs late (meaning you get paid late) or takes more work time (meaning your profit margins get reduced) it can be enough to sink the business.
While big companies have expensive solutions from SAP or Oracle, we didn’t think it was right that millions of small and medium-sized professional service firms have had to make do with scattered spreadsheets or clunky out of date technology.
