The key issue with fabricated data is generally not whether it is truthful or accurate. The concern around fabricated data is a lack of appropriate process, validation, and transparency — not whether that data happens to be true or not in its content. The truthfulness of fabricated data is generally moot as that can not be substantiated either way.

Remeber dreams and imagination are fabricated data,so are almost all sales pitches, ROI calculations, most research data and other data that is generated to be able to justify overcoming a hurdle, gain a reward or because of an incentive.

How do we detect fabricated data?

  • Look for inconsistencies or anomalies. Fabricated data often has patterns that don’t match what you’d expect from natural data. For example, the data could lack the normal variation you’d expect or have duplications, unusual distributions, etc.
  • Try to replicate the data collection. If the data can’t be replicated using the same methods described, that raises red flags. Legitimate data should be replicable.
  • Look at the metadata. Details like timestamps, geolocation, etc. may have telltale signs of fabrication if they don’t line up with the data itself.
  • Compare to related data sets. If the data significantly contradicts trusted outside…
