This is How I Become Better at Talking to People
I felt like that I had no life socially.
I felt like that I had no life socially.
This is something I have been struggling with quite a lot recently; I have always been quite an introverted person, but I was starting to struggle for words in conversations, doubt every phrase I said, and end up hiding in my room rather than dealing with the prospect of casual conversations.
Something had to change.
My first action was to conduct a research.
Well, I am in college and research is what we do, isn’t it?
I stumbled upon a fascinating concept in social psychology: This is thus a balance between the warm and the competent. The research has it that the charismatic people possess high levels of these two aspects.
It feels like a balancing act in a sense where you want to be friendly and be seen as friendly, relatable, and trustworthy (that’s the warmth, right?) but at the same time you want to be professional and authoritative (that’s the competence, I believe!).
This discovery took me to my first practical experiment. I chose warmth and competence as the two aspects that I would like to work on deliberately to manage my impression.
