Dealing with toxic people is easy. Spotting them is not.
I once had a roommate who stole a watch from me, took money from another roommate, and refused to pay the rent.
At first glance, he didn’t look like a bad person. He didn’t act in the ways we’re told toxic people usually act in. In fact, he was even likable and down to earth.
After he betrayed the trust of everyone in our shared flat, I started to see things I first hadn’t given much weight to. I started remembering little things in his behavior that suggested he was the lying, manipulative person he turned out to be.
In other words, I remembered many incidents during which his mask fell off. For milliseconds, I saw his true face, but he quickly wore his mask and acted like nothing happened. And I just ignored that.
We were 4 dudes, perfectly confident and assertive, figuring out how we had been deceived by a con artist. Once we realized that, we were able to deal with him properly. The main problem was that we didn’t know how toxic he was.
Had we known, we would’ve saved ourselves a lot of effort, drama, and money.
