Regrants for capacity-building leverage national philanthropic support in local communities supporting refugees and immigrants

Hello Neighbor and The Walmart Foundation have awarded capacity-building grants to 22 nonprofits across the nation working with refugees and immigrants. The Hello Neighbor Network is a coalition of nearly two dozen grassroots organizations across the U.S. working with refugees and immigrants and organizations can apply for regrants as members.

The fellowship to membership network developed its regrant program last year as part of the broader strategy of the Network to build capacity and connections for young organizations leading in the field. Through the regrant program, the Hello Neighbor Network leverages national philanthropic support in local communities.

The most recent contribution by the Hello Neighbor Network to nonprofits supporting refugees and immigrants was made possible by a grant from the Walmart Foundation. Organizations in the Network were eligible to apply for capacity-building grants of up to $2,500. Those awarded grants will focus funds on capacity-building within their programs and operations.

Organizations in the Hello Neighbor Network (2021)

Organizations receiving the grant include:

Some areas of program capacity building include:

  • starting a pilot wellness program for refugee women focused on mental and emotional wealth led by trained, bilingual peer leaders
  • developing funding sustainability through the development and expansion of a consumer packaged goods program
  • growing an outdoor soccer pilot program to reach additional community members in the service area
  • stipends for refugee volunteers to be trained in peace-building through sports to facilitate programming at the organization

Some areas of organizational capacity building include:

  • a strategic planning process engaging both board and community members in defining the growth of the organization
  • growing a staff support team for community sponsorship
  • formalizing a volunteer handbook and increasing staff support to build greater volunteer capacity
  • purchasing Quickbooks and hiring an accountant to set up organizational codes and classifications in the system

Investments in communities like this one from The Walmart Foundation make a big impact on nonprofits as they deepen and grow their important work.
