#MentalHealthAwarenessWeek: Meet KwolleM

Producer and Model KwolleM gives his thoughts on Mental Health Awareness

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and at Circular we are all for encouraging discussion of Mental Health. Raising awareness is vital, and it’s necessary to do so in a safe way.

Who are you?

I’m Mellow K backwards (or KwolleM forwards?), been producing for around 3 years — I’d say it got a bit more serious when Mellow Grime started, which was 2 years ago. The first remix I made, was super rough, but sonically hit a chord & instantly got a lot of press buzz.

Why KwolleM?

I’m Mellow & my name begins with K, it’s cool that I flipped the name & I’m one for flipping Grime into something mellow.

Is creation an effective form of stress relief? If not, what are your go-to activities to relieve stress?

100%, music is my medium of stress relief. When i’m producing I forget about everything, I’m sure I’ve gone days without eating, because I was producing.

Why do you think so many stay silent about MH Problems?

I feel there’s an innate feeling that it’s unique, when it really isn’t. Also no one wants to come across as vulnerable. I know personally, I didn’t want to burden anyone when I was going through stuff.

How do you think we can go about de-stigmatising MH?

Active education, I don’t think I even knew what depression was beyond a synonym for sadness. Need to learn how to distinguish between normal emotions & mental health issues — what to do about it, what services are on offer, etc.

What is next for KwolleM?

Got a project coming soon! Should be a good one, will be mellow & British, mellow grime, maybe even mellow drill!

You can check out KwolleM’s music via SoundCloud and Spotify, and keep up to date with news of upcoming releases via his Twitter.
