Color Schemes That Work

Artists & designers have been using a number of established color schemes to develop successful pieces. Understanding which color scheme is appropriate for your project can help you develop a more effective palette.

Monochromatic

Monochromatic color schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using its shades, tones and tints. Tints are created by adding white and black to further expand that palette.

Complementary

Complementary colors are two hues that are opposite from each other on the color wheel. Two complementary colors typically create strong contrast which brands can effectively utilize. Sports teams typically use complementary colors.

Split Complementary

A variation of the Complementary color scheme. There is one base color and two secondary colors that are opposite side of the color wheel. This helps create a more harmonious palette and less jarring.

Analogous

This color palette uses colors that all are right next to each other. They usually match well and create soft and comfortable designs. These colors are typically found in nature can be pleasing to the eye.

Triadic

The Triadic color scheme is using 3 different colors that are in the color wheel. These palettes typically look harmonious but with a bit more character and attitude.

Tetradic & Square

Using 4 colors that create a rectangular shape on the color wheel. Because all 4 colors are equally distributed among the color wheel, there is no clear dominance in 1 color.
