Gestalt principles, or gestalt laws, are a set of rules describing how humans typically perceive objects by grouping similar elements, identifying patterns, and simplifying complex images.

Gestalt laws are pivotal in UX, especially when it comes to interface design.

After all, users must be able to understand what they see! 👀

❕ Law of Proximity — things that are close together appear to be more related than things that are spaced farther apart.

Law of Proximity

Things that are close together appear to be more related than things that are spaced farther apart.

This header forms one group with list items. Because of that, they’re perceived as a group. Heading describes what this list is about.

The end of one list and the begining of the next list is easily distinguishable. It’s clear that the 2nd header belongs to the 2nd list.

It is still clear that this header belongs to the list beneath it.

But! This one is placed closer to the first list than the 2nd. Friction is introduced — it’s not clear if this header describes the 2nd list or is some kind of an info related to the firs one.
