Last week I read the book «Hooked» by @neyal99 which is basically about the techniques and patterns used to build habit-forming digital products.

I summed up my key learning for you but I highly recommend reading this book 📕

Habit-forming product-require users to go through the four stages of the Hook-Model repeatedly.

The Trigger

External: An event that gets us to try a product the first time ( e.g. a tv commercial). Internal: Trying to overcome a specific feeling ( e.g. loneliness, boredom, etc.)

Action

Doing things that we need to do in order to use a product e.g. creating an account, comment, like and share something, check if people have liked the post, etc.

Rewards

The fulfillment of the need that originally motivates us to take action, for example, being entertained if the motivation was boredom.

The investment

Something of the value that you have invested in the product, such as time, information or money.

Over time, the internal triggers become stronger so that eventually the user will not even think about it.

If we make a mental connection between a product and the desired solution of a problem we form a trigger to our product.

Human goals

  • Seeking pleasure/avoiding pain
  • Seeking hope/avoiding fear
  • Seeking social acceptance/avoiding rejection
