The Best Designer Tool πŸ”

β €
Some people are inherently blessed (or cursed, depending on your perspective) with a great eye for design πŸ”Ž
β €
One of the innate talents of a good designer in any design industry is having a good eye for design. But what does it mean to have a good eye for design? πŸ€”
β €
So what is it exactly? What are our design eyes looking for?
β €
I believe a big part of it is taking in the gestalt of design, and understanding why the individual parts are contributing to a greater whole. Often times you will hear people say, Β«I like that design because it’s so clean.Β» Β«I like that design because it feels warm.Β» Or the design evokes a mood.
β €
But what does it mean to be clean or warm? How does a static design evoke a mood? If you ask a designer with a good design eye to take a look, they can tell you exactly what it means πŸ‘οΈβ€πŸ—¨οΈ
β €
It could be the way white space is used between or around elements to give airiness and uncrowded feeling to design. Or it could be the lack of white space that is causing a feeling of tension and lack of wiggle room. It could be the overall composition of the design.
β €
All I know is that I take in all the inspiration I can and trust in my own artistic process to develop and cultivate an idea into something tangible.
β €
These are the folks whose brains process objects, colors, and composition differently than anyone else. They see shapes, shadows, and white space that are invisible to others. These are the people who can feel the rush of endorphins when witnessing a good layout or perfectly placed photo frames 🧠
β €
You just have to trust your gut. Put yourself into the work and be passionate about it.
β €
Cheers! πŸ‘‹

It’s the Design Eye.

Never snap to guides or let your computer make all those decisions for you.

I think for strong, effective design, one needs to have a good eye, the right intuition.

Even the famous corporate logo designer Paul Rand once said,

β€œIt’s all intuition”, and if you don’t have it, I’m pretty sure it can’t be taught.”

So what is it exactly? What are our design eyes looking for?

A big part of it is taking in the Gestalt ot a design.

(Gestalt theory: similarity, continuation, closure, proximity, figure/ground, and symmetry & order)

Having a good design eye also means knowing what the trends of the day are.

Then there are the more intangible aspects of having a good design eye. You just have to trust your gut.
