It can be quite a challenge to come up with creative project ideas, either for fun or to build out your portfolio 💼

To help, here are a few strategies that you can use to get those idea gears turning to build your own projects.

🔸 Look at existing sites — break them down into their different functionalities, and then use that to inspire you to make a similar type of project!

🔸 Solve problems that you encounter in your own life — being lazy or easily dissatisfied can be an asset in this case. Because they can lead you to write code to solve problems, either your own or others!

🔸 Think of your most-used websites or apps and the problems they solve or how they help you.

🔸 One tip as you think of projects — stay unique. Many popular tutorials and courses make the same types of projects. If you put in a little extra work to think of a creative idea, your portfolio will stand out from the crowd.

Look at existing sites!

Get inspired and make a similar project, but put your own spin on it :)
EXAMPLES:

  • TripAdvisor (travel and booking site)
  • Retail website with store locator
  • Restaurant website with online ordering

Solve problems in your own life

If something in your daily life frustrates you and makes you think, “This should work way better!!” Then you’ve found a potential idea for a project!
Identifying problems and being able to build a solution to it, even for something small, can be the start for many projects.

What are your favorite websites or apps?

When you use a website or mobile app throughout your day, think about the functionality that makes it work.
Write down any interesting ones and you will soon have a nice bank of ideas for web apps that you could build.

Stay creative, and make unique projects.

Try to make ideas that aren’t super common in tutorials, like a weather app, pomodoro timer or Trello clone. Those are perfectly good ideas, but they are a bit overused now.
Your portfolio will stand out if you build unique projects that few other people have thought of.

Bonus — useful designer tools for everyday usage:

FlowKit — allows designers to create frighteningly fast user flows within Sketch and Figma.
Leadpages — lets you build beautiful, high-converting websites, unlimited landing pages, pop-up forms you can add to your other websites.
FlyWheel — is managed WordPress hosting built for designers and creative agencies.
Crello — a free graphic design editor that helps create images for social media, print, and other web-based graphics.
