A long bike journey is always a welcome challenge for any bike enthusiast. However, it also holds a lot of potential for trouble if you are not prepared well enough. Hence, it is a wise idea to check the condition of your bike and its parts thoroughly before embarking on a long ride. Here is a bike check list for you that can ensure you have a safe and comfortable trip.

Tyres

Check the condition of your bike’s tyres before starting the journey because if these are not in suitable condition, there is a possibility of them ripping or wearing-off while you are riding. This can not only be a potentially dangerous situation, but you could also have a tough time replacing them on the way. And don’t forget to check the air pressure frequently as well.

Fuel

Ensure you have a full tank before starting the journey, and make sure to keep filling it before petrol level hits reserve. This way you will not have to worry about running out of petrol while riding or having to look for a fuel pump on your way. As an added precaution, you can carry a bottle of petrol with you.

Wheel balancing

Another important check you need to make is the wheel-balance. Ensure the wheels on your bike do not wobble and that the skewers are tightened. This not only increases your safety, but also makes riding a more pleasurable experience.

Brakes

Having properly functioning brakes is critical; and if ignored, can become perilous for you. Hilly and rough terrains may cause wear and tear of the brake, and hence your need to ensure that the brakes are responsive and work without any glitch. Check the brake pads, rotors and the brake fluid.

Chain

A loose chain could mean difficult throttle inputs, while a chain that is too tight can disturb suspension. Alternatively, also ensure the chain is not worn out as it can cause a safety hazard. To be entirely sure, get a mechanic to check the bike’s chain.

Engine

Do get your engine tuned, especially if your bike has a history of engine problems. You can also test the engine by going on several short rides before going on a long route. Listen for any strange sounds or if it shows any resistance. If you feel the engine isn’t performing the way it should, get it checked.

Helmet

Last, and the most important one for your safety is a well-maintained, ISI marked helmet. The helmet should fit firmly on your head, should be comfortable and not interfere with your vision. Wear it at all times to ensure you are always protected on your journey.

You can also consider carrying along a small bike tool kit (pliers, puncture repair kit, knife, screwdriver, adjustable wrench, wire, duct tape, torch). This can come in handy if you face minor problems. A good bike will make your journey memorable. So, ensure everything is in shape to have an amazing expedition. Happy journey!!
