You trust your motorcycle helmet to protect your head every time you venture out on a ride. But have you ever wondered what materials are used to make these different shields that protect your head? Here are some of the most common materials used to construct helmets and how they help keep you safe.

Polycarbonate

This is a lightweight material that is incredibly durable, which makes it the perfect choice for creating the outermost layer. This layer’s purpose is to reduce the impact on your head in case of an accident. Other popular materials used for making this shell include fibre glass or composite fibre, polycarbonate, carbon fibre or Kevlar.

Styrofoam and Koroyd

Also known as Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Styrofoam is one of the most popular materials used for the inner lining in a helmet. It is also commonly known as thermocol and has always been reliable considering its impact-absorbing qualities. Although Styrofoam is cheap and does the job well, it has certain drawbacks. For example, many riders complain of experiencing concussions when their head hits something. A new element — Koroyd, is being tested to replace Styrofoam as it is believed to be 30% safer because it can absorb more impact. Koroyd is made by welding tiny tubes together so that when the helmet hits something, these tubes break and absorb the impact, keeping your head safe from injury.

Foam

This is used as comfort padding and is an important component because it is in constant contact with the skin. For this reason, it should be comfortable and made from a material that does not irritate. Foam also ensures you get a perfect fit and is capable of absorbing moisture.

Acrylic and Polycarbonates

These materials are used to construct the helmet’s visor, which keeps dust, smoke, rain, wind and other harmful objects from getting into your eyes and affecting your vision. A clean visor is a must-have. Remember to replace your visor from time-to-time. Failing to do so could leave you with a visor full of scratches, which can make riding tricky.

Nylon or Polypropylene

Although most people choose to ignore it, the chin strap is quite an important component of the helmet. It is a retention system that prevents the helmet from flying off your head in case of a crash. This strap is made from either nylon or polypropylene, and despite looking quite similar, they vary in the weave, surface etc.

There is no doubt that helmets make bike rides safe. Never leave your head unprotected while riding a motorcycle. This minimal piece of gear can not only protect you from injuries but can also save your life.
