Help! My boyfriend accepted a job as a school bus driver but he doesn’t have a driver’s license…
Hey! So my boyfriend was recently laid off from his job (mass tech layoffs- so much fun!) and he recently accepted a position as a school bus driver. He’s starting next week and he’s really excited about it because he loves the color yellow. However, when we were having dinner last night, he just realized that he’s never driven a car before, so he doesn’t have a driver’s license. He’s a bit nervous that the school will ask to see his license before he gets behind the wheel. What should he do?
-No License, Big Problem
Hello No License, Big Problem,
Don’t worry, this happens more often than you’d think. Just spend ten minutes in Baltimore and you’ll soon realize that most people can’t drive. Your boyfriend is in good company!
The way I see it, you have two different problems. First, you’re worried that the school will ask to see a driver’s license. Honestly, I wouldn’t be concerned. Most public schools are so underfunded that he could hand them a piece of construction paper with someone else’s face on it, and the poor secretary who has nine parents beating down the door of the front office to strangle her to death because their kids have no way of getting to school will have no choice but to hire your boyfriend.
The other problem is that your boyfriend can’t drive. Or so he thinks! The best way to learn is through experience. On his first day, tell him to let all of the children know that he is a new driver, and he would appreciate their patience as he learn to navigate the road. I’m sure they’ll be understanding. In fact, the students can learn to drive with him! After all, school is an educational experience. He should let the kids take turns driving the bus so everyone has the chance to learn. In this car-focused society, it’s never too early to start!
Best of luck, and please let me know where you’re located so I know to stay off the roads.
