Help! My boyfriend has been living in a sandcastle on the beach, but every night the waves wash it away…
Hey, thanks in advance for reading. So rent prices in our city have gotten really high, and honestly we can’t afford it. My boyfriend has a background in construction, so last week he built a sandcastle on the beach, which is nice because it’s a lot cheaper. The plan was for him to live in the castle for a little while until everything was set up, and then I would join him when my lease ended. The problem is that every night, the high tide from the ocean destroys the sandcastle. This wasn’t a problem originally because he would just rebuild the castle every morning, but work has gotten really busy for him so he doesn’t have a lot of time. Usually he just remakes his bedroom, but when the two of us live together, we’ll need more space.
What should we do? How can we stop the ocean from destroying our home every single day? If this continues then he’ll have to move into my studio apartment with me, and that seems like a huge hassle. Thanks.

Hello Sandcastle Worries,
Good job finding a creative way to circumvent rising rent prices. I’ve been living inside the dairy freezer at the grocery store to avoid paying rent, so I might need to take a page out of your book! It’s probably a lot warmer! LOL.
As for your dilemma, you have two options. First, you can move your sandcastle. I’d suggest borrowing a wheelbarrow from a friend and transporting the sand to a different location, perhaps further away from the water. You mentioned that you had a studio apartment? You could try building the sandcastle in your apartment. That way, you can split the rent of a studio while both having your own space (I presume your boyfriend would live in the sandcastle, but you can switch on and off if you’d like).
Your second option is to prevent the water from reaching the sandcastle in the first place. You could try building some sort of barrier, but nature is a powerful force, and the waves would probably break through. Instead, I suggest using a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the water in the ocean. That way, you will be safe from the waves and you’ll have more space to expand your sandcastle, if you’d like.
Just make sure you don’t build too big because then you’ll have to pay property tax, and that defeats the whole damn purpose. Best of luck.
