Hi! This is a whole long story so I’ll try and make it quick- basically, my boyfriend ordered a coffee from Starbucks using the app so he could just walk into the store and pick it up at the counter. You’re supposed to find the drink with your name on it, but he has a really common first name and he accidentally picked up someone else’s drink, which he didn’t realize until he came home.

Unfortunately, the rightful owner of the coffee watched my boyfriend take his order and followed him back to our apartment (technically it’s my boyfriend’s apartment because my name isn’t on the lease, he’s going through a divorce, it’s a whole thing). Anyways, this guy asked for the drink back, but my boyfriend already took a sip so he didn’t want to return it because he’s a carrier for mono (we kiss through a piece of saran wrap, I don’t feel like getting into it). One thing lead to another, and now this guy is hunting my boyfriend across state lines so he can get his drink back. What should my boyfriend do? Should he give it back? He’s hiding in a shed outside of Little Rock, Arkansas at the moment, but it’s not sustainable. Help!

Hi Coffee To Go!

I think we should all take a moment to ground ourselves and remember that when we pick up a mobile order, we should read our name AND the order so situations like this don’t happen. Truth be told, I was once a witness to a violent fight that broke out in a Starbucks for this same reason. There were teeth everywhere. It was quite gruesome.

Anyways, your boyfriend should not give the drink back. As you stated, he is a carrier for mono, and giving mono to an unsuspecting victim is bad etiquette. However, your boyfriend did cause this problem, so it’s his responsibility to remedy it. As a show of good faith, he should invite this stranger into his shed and offer him a similar beverage to the one that he took. Most beverages can be made in a shed if you’re willing to be creative. Hopefully he will see that your boyfriend put in effort to undo the wrong he committed and forgive him. In addition, your boyfriend should legally change his name so this doesn’t happen again.

He can also throw this guy a couple dollars. Sometimes money can fix your problems.
