DIY: Non-Slip Calming Cap

The Calming Cap is a great tool for easing a dog’s anxiety or fear of visual stimuli. The idea is genius, a shear piece of fabric stretched comfortably over a dog’s eyes reducing visual stimuli, in turn lowering your dog’s emotional arousal. The tricky part is keeping it in place!

To make a non-slip Calming Cap you need two items: a Calming Cap (clearly! 😉) and a martingale collar.

Slip the long Velcro strap under the part of the collar that will sit on the back of your dog’s neck.

The short Velcro strap slips under the part of the collar that will sit under your dog’s jaw. I positioned and fastened the Velcro right around the center of the small loop of the martingale collar, opposite the D-ring. The weight of the D-ring will keep the calming cap from slipping!

Now that the Calming Cap is in place, position it so that your dog’s muzzle can be guided through the elastic portion of the Cap.

Before placing the Cap, the collar should be adjusted so that it slides easily over your dog’s head.

Now that the Cap is on, use your dog’s regular collar if you plan on going for a walk. Remember to do no harm and prevent your dog from walking into things or stepping off curbs.

Happy Training!
