Hotties of the Week (26/11)

It’s not girls in bikinis, just my fire picks from the past week including Montell2099, #NetNeutrality and RnV.

#1 Montell2099 — SUSU

I’m not going to be one of those assholes who says “if you’ve never heard of so-and-so then you’ve been living under a rock”. I almost did, but then I remembered that everyone has different musical tastes that they’re entitled to (even if they’re wrong). However I think that Montell2099 is an artist that anyone can appreciate. If you consider yourself a music fan of any kind, you’ll appreciate the beautiful complexity of this kiwi artists production. After releasing ‘Hunnid On The Drop’ with 21 Savage, his latest offering is a return to the space-synth foundation he rose from, combined with a drop that will be heard in EDM DJ sets around the world. In fact both the King and Prince of trap music (RL Grime and Ekali) both utilised the unique sounds of ‘SUSU’ in their latest sets.

#2 Big Quint — SYRE First Listen

I might be saturating this blog with Jaden Smith but if you have never watched a Big Quint review, get ready to watch a grown man lose his shit. This guy has been doing first listen reviews for years now (his one for J.Cole’s ‘2014 Forest Hills Drive’ is incredible) so he is a veteran and an absolute pleasure to watch. Just do yourself a favour and watch the first 5 minutes of this video, I’m sure you’ll want to watch more.

#3 Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality has never been cooler. You’d be forgiven for not knowing it’s significance because it is something we’ve always had. But the governments are trying to take it away from us. Let me explain; basically, the US government want to give internet service providers (ISPs) full control over peoples access to internet sites. Under the proposed terms they’ll be able to charge user more to access certain sites, regulate the speed of certain sites, and monitor everything you do.

Hahahahahahaha… but seriously.

So yeah, having Net Neutrality is fucking awesome. It means freedom of speech and freedom of choice. While this only affects the USA at the moment, if the legislation passes over there, we will be confronted with it all over the world soon enough. If you want to join the conversation (and you should), it’s as simple as googling “Net Neutrality”.

#4 Talent Over Passion

My dear friend Hayden is yet another recent BCS graduate who has taken up blog writing. He’s much more creative with words that I am, I guess that’s why he’s going to make a career out of putting them together in ways that will make us buy stuff. His first post is all about the internal battles we have trying to decide whether to do what we love or what we’re good at. It’s a compelling read, so go and have a geez here:

#5 Rhythm & Vines (NOT HOT)

Maybe it’s all a cons-consp-conspiracy…

I guess this is the Nottie (Not-Hottie)of the Week. It doesn’t fit with the theme of this post but I need to get this off my chest. RnV just made their third and final lineup announcement for 2017 and let’s just say ‘man’s not hot’ about it. We were promised that this announcement would include huge international acts - something that RnV needed to bolster the lacklustre lineup they had announced so far. It would have been perfect timing too. Northern Bass had just lost Post Malone, and Bay Dreams were pushing their lineup announcement back for unknown reasons. It was time for RnV to assert their dominance in the NZ festival scene. But instead we got Big Shaq and not much else. On top of that, Bay Dreams announced that they had booked Big Shaq just a couple of hours before RnV, absolutely stealing the fleeting meme spotlight. Looking over the RnV lineup, it’s one of the worst in recent years. RnV are definitely not hot.

Hotties of the Week are my picks of the coolest stuff to hear and see. Hopefully every 7 days I can find more and more fire.
