After a 2 year hiatus Mac Miller dropped his latest project titled Swimming promoting self care and mental growth. Swimming is Mac Miller’s tale of learning how to swim after feeling as if he was drowning, with subliminal references to ex-girlfriend Ariana Grande and his car crash, Mac Miller paints a picture of learning to thrive after living in a dark place.

With little to no exposure to Mac Miller’s music I wasn’t sure what to expect from this project. To say the least, I was very impressed. The production on the instrumentals is amazing and gives off a mellow, 90’s hip-hop vibe which I love. So if you are a fan of the chill hip-hop with a relatable message then this is for you. The major positive of the album was Mac’s passionate vocal delivery and the subject matter he covers. Swimming follows the Pittsburgh rappers recent personal struggles. Mac Miller and Ariana Grande broke up earlier this year after Ariana went on record saying that Miller couldn’t ‘keep his shit together’. Swimming illustrates the struggles after his break up and the dark part of his life that followed, saying that he struggled to take care of himself. This then beautifully transitions into a self-love album as he quickly learns how to take care of himself and eventually learns how to fly and thrive cause of the dark place he arose from.

I can see very little negatives in this album and I really had to nitpick for this one, but the album didn’t have any party tracks. This isn’t a huge deal to me, but I can see how it might be if you were hoping to play it during a car ride with the boys. Some high energy tracks would’ve been an amazing way to end the project after going on this journey of escaping from the darkness to learn how to love yourself again.

Overall I would definitely recommend Swimming for anyone who loves chill music and if you are looking for music to get high with then you need to hear this, cause I swear it’s twice as good when you’re under the influence.
