After bursting onto the Auckland pop scene at the end of 2018 with the infectious track Born Leader, Wells* has been releasing consistently great music every few months. As the kids say, Wells* fans ‘been eating’.

Now, coinciding with NZ Music Month, Wells* is back with what might be his best effort yet. Like Hell is a song about the regret you feel post-break-up. Naturally, when something bad happens we try to put the blame on something or someone and Wells* describes the song as narrating the moment he started to shift the blame from his ex to himself.

“I started thinking that their ‘love’ was actually what I needed, despite being the one to break things off.”

Artists often have a signature sounds but for Wells*, I’m starting to believe that incredible percussion might be his signature sound. It’s what has stood out about his previous releases, and it’s what keeps Like Hell chugging.

The track displays a great diversity too. It has an expected alt-pop vibe that makes gorgeous background music on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but wouldn’t be out-of-place as a drunk 2AM sing-along. Either way, Like Hell is one that will stay in our playlists long after the end of NZMM.
