Going where women need us most
For women living in remote communities, the nearest health care clinic might be hours or even days away. That’s why we go to them, reaching women in some of the world’s most marginalized and underserved communities.
In 2018, nearly a quarter of our clients were living in extreme poverty, defined as living on less than $1.25 a day. And more than half of our clients would have no other way to get contraception, safe abortion and other services had it not been for MSI.
For Aku Amag, a 20-year-old woman in rural Ghana, a visit from an MSI outreach team was life-changing. Aku was forced to leave school when she became pregnant at 16. Now with two young children at home, she and her partner struggle to make ends meet for their family. “He is a coconut seller, and he isn’t able to provide for the family financially right now,” Aku explained.
So, when the MSI outreach team arrived in her community, Aku was eager to find out more. “I heard there would be free family planning service here today. I have never used contraception before, but it will help me space my births and plan our family.”
Aku chose a five-year implant, which she received for free. “I had heard of family planning before, but I’d heard bad things,” she said. “I now feel reassured.”
Like Aku, 52% of our clients in 2018 weren’t using contraception before MSI provided it to them. We’re determined to reach women wherever they are because we know that when a woman can make her own choices about her body, she’s empowered to decide her future.
