Ann Meyers Drysdale POY Watch List: By the Numbers
On December 5, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) named the top 35 players to the 2020 Ann Myers Drysdale Award Watch List for the NCAA Women’s Basketball National Player of the Year won last season by Iowa’s Megan Gustafson.
Here is a breakdown of the list:
By School
26 different schools are represented on the watch list, led by the UConn Huskies with four players (Crystal Dangerfield, Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Megan Walker, Christyn Williams), followed by Oregon with three (Ruthy Hebard, Sabrina Ionescu, Satou Sabally). Duke, Maryland, Oregon State and South Carolina are the other schools with multiple players —each had two.
By Conference
There are 11 different conferences represented on the list led by eight players from the Pac-12, and five each from the AAC and SEC.
By Year
The Watch List is heavy on seniors, redshirt seniors and grad students with a total of 21 (60%), while only one freshman was named (South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston).
By Position
Guards were a majority of the list with 19 players (54%).
The list will be narrowed down to semi-finalists in January and finalists in March. The NCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Year will be revealed on April 13, 2020.
