Lamar University, a large public university in Beaumont, Texas, is not necessarily known for its athletics programs. The Southland conference member’s programs generally fly under the radar, but the women’s basketball team’s point guard should be doing anything but that. Chastadie Barrs does a little bit of everything for the Cardinals. So far this season, she is averaging 16.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 5.7 steals per game. She’s also recorded five triple-doubles.

Barrs is best known for her quick hands. Her 5.7 steals per game ranks first in the country — making it the third consecutive season that she has held the top spot. Even in her freshman season, her 3.7 steals per game ranked third in the nation. This season, she is a full 1.6 steals per game ahead of the second-ranked player in the NCAA. Barrs is coming away with the steal on 8.0 percent of her opponents’ possessions, which is actually a little below her 8.4 percent steal rate from the 2017–18 season.

Even more impressive is that Barrs has posted double-digit steals in three games already this season. She has two games with 10 and one game with 12 steals — and in all three games, she also recorded a triple-double. The 12 steals is the most recorded by any player so far this season. In that game, against New Orleans on January 9th, Barrs recorded a near quadruple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists and 12 steals.

The double-digit steal games aren’t Barrs’s only triple-doubles this year. She has recorded a triple-double in five games thus far, breaking the school record of four, which she set last season.

2018–19 Triple Doubles for Chastadie Barrs

Her five triple-doubles so far are just one shy of the NCAA single season record six that Oregon’s triple-double queen Sabrina Ionescu has recorded this season. However, Barrs is still well behind Ionescu’s NCAA-record 16 triple-doubles.

Career Triple-Doubles: Sabrina Ionescu vs. Chastadie Barrs

Barrs has recorded more unconventional triple-doubles, with six including ten or more steals. Ionescu’s 16 triple-doubles have all been of the traditional points, assists, and rebounds combination.

Currently, Lamar University is 6–0 in conference play, tied for first place in the Southland Conference. As Barrs continues to do some of everything on the court for the Cardinals, she will also look to carry Lamar to a conference championship and their fifth NCAA tournament birth, which would be the team’s first since 2012.
