Indiana Quietly On A Roll
In case you haven’t heard, the Indiana Hoosiers are currently on a 15-game win streak, the longest current active win streak in the NCAA. The streak started March 1st with a six-game championship run through last season’s Postseason WNIT in Bloomington, IN. The victories have continued through Sunday’s ninth victory this season against Missouri State.
The streak was initially led by then seniors Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill. Both were named to the WNIT Postseason All-Tournament team with Buss earning MVP honors. Those two graduated, but the streak continued.
The team has more a more balanced scoring attack this season with four players averaging double-digit points per game led by Ali Patberg at 17.3 and Brenna Wise at 15.1.
Offensively, the Hoosiers have shot very well so far this season and are high on the following NCAA leader boards:
Field Goal % 16th (47.9%)
Free Throws Made 16th (145)
Points Per Scoring Attempt 21st (1.21)
On the defensive side of the ball, Indiana has been rebounding very well. They rank 15th in Defensive Rebounding Rate (75%) and 32nd in Total Rebounding Rate (56%).
Although the average margin of victory during the streak is nearly 17, Indiana has had some close calls. The streak nearly didn’t survive the start of the season when on November 11 they defeated Milwaukee by only two points 68–66. They also defeated UCLA December 2, another close game.
Coach Teri Moren is keeping the team steady and consistent with the “One game at a time” mantra. Indiana will try to extend the streak Wednesday December 19 against 6–2 Loyola Marymount in the Puerto Rico Classic, a round robin tournament that also includes Grambling State and South Dakota. The Big Ten season opens December 28 against Illinois.
It will be interesting to see how long the streak can continue, especially once the Big Ten season starts. The Associated Press has noticed the results so far and Indiana received 12 votes in the AP poll last week. If the Hoosiers continue doing the basics well, each added win will instill confidence needed to continue their amazing run.
