It was a WNBA Finals for the ages as the Washington Mystics defeated the Connecticut Sun 89-78 to win their first-ever championship in a thrilling Game 5 on ESPN2.

The channel stayed with the postgame on-court celebration and trophy presentation by WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and then switched to NBA TV for postgame press conferences with coaches and players.

After criticism from fans for a lack of pre or post game coverage in earlier rounds of the playoffs and during the season, these Finals championship interviews provided many heartwarming, touching and humorous takes from both sides.

The infamous Axe Throwing

We heard Connecticut Sun coach Curt Miller express how proud he was of his team and noted that the Mystics played a better 10 minutes in the fourth quarter and deserved the championship.

Elena Delle Donne, accompanied by Kristi Toliver and Natasha Cloud to the podium, began the players’ press conference by warning “I’d like to apologize; we’re going to be a rowdy bunch.” We also learned that Delle Donne played with not one, but three, herniated discs and heard her heartwarming tribute to her sister Lizzie, who she called her “biggest motivator.”

Toliver and Cloud still had their champagne goggles on, adding more joy and surreality to the festivities.

Finally, the WNBA did a full and proper postgame show! However, this did not sit well with some folks. The Minnesota Timberwolves PR account posted an informational tweet stating that its preseason game would be joined in progress after the WNBA Finals coverage. This brought out the usual trolls with disparaging comments about the WNBA. Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve replied to a comment of “Ridiculous!” in a very appropriate way.

Although the WNBA season is sadly over, the great postgame coverage of the 2019 WNBA Finals championship game left us with many happy memories to last us through the offseason.
