Currently sitting at the top of the Western Conference standings, the Las Vegas Aces hold a record of 11–6.

Here are some of my favorite images I took when the Aces came to the nation’s capital on July 13.

Washington’s LaToya Sanders and Las Vegas’ Liz Cambage jump for the opening tip

These two teams have not had the best of luck when playing each other. During last season, there was a forfeit between the two teams. This season, in their first matchup, the game was postponed because of an earthquake.

The game did not last long after this first picture; a few seconds later, the referees stopped the game because the shot clocks on either end of the court were out of sync and the horn was not working.

So we waited.

And waited.

And waited.

More than 15 minutes later, the PA announcer told the crowd that the physical shot clocks were not going to be used and time would be kept on the jumbotrons on either end of the building.

“That’s not terrible,” I thought to myself. Except then I thought, “What about the horn?” In the middle of that thought, I heard a loud *HONK*.

“I thought, ‘They can’t possibly be using an air horn in a professional basketball game.’”

They were.

Substitutions? *HONK*

End of shot clock? *HONK*

End of quarter? *HONK*

End of timeout? *HONK* wait for it…. *HONK*

The sound still resonates in my head as I’m writing this from home.

Las Vegas’ Liz Cambage

It was my first time seeing Liz Cambage, or any of the Aces’ players for that matter. I always knew she was tall, but the realization of how tall didn’t hit until it was in-person and I was literally standing next to her.

Las Vegas’ Jackie Young dribbles the ball past half-court
Las Vegas’ A’ja Wilson takes a mid-range jump shot

A’ja Wilson played well in this game, scoring 17 points in 30 minutes. I really loved this shot of Wilson shooting a nice step-back mid-range jump shot over Washington’s Emma Meesseman.

Las Vegas’ A’ja Wilson steps up for a floater over Washington’s Emma Meesseman

This was one of my favorite shots from this game: A’ja Wilson driving to the basket and pulling up with a nice floater while surrounded by three Mystics defenders.

Las Vegas’ Syndey Colson directs the offense against Washington’s Kristi Toliver

Las Vegas pulled this game out in the end, winning 85–81.
