I’m happy to announce the launch of Stories by Her Hoop Stats, the latest phase of our adventure.

Life has been a whirlwind since the site went live early in the 2017–18 NCAA season. We’re proud of the work we’ve done so far and amazed at the support and coverage the project has received. Our goal is to unlock better insight about the women’s game. It’s been incredibly rewarding to feel like we’re making a contribution and that so many leaders of the game feel that it’s important.

Perhaps even more rewarding has been how many people are excited about the mission and responded to my call for volunteers (and we’re always looking for more). That’s what has enabled us to launch Stories. From the start we knew that a large part of our work would be to help our community learn to appreciate the statistics we’re making more accessible.

Two things have become even clearer over time:

  • The need for more journalism to educate women’s basketball about the concepts of basketball analytics and how to apply them to today’s game
  • How underserved women’s basketball fans are and how fragmented media coverage is, especially for the college game

Stories is our effort to help fill that void. Rather than introduce everyone on the story side of the team today, I’m looking forward to you getting to know them as we publish their articles, videos, and more. Again, they are all (currently) unpaid volunteers who have left me awestruck with their investment of time and energy for our vision. The same is true of our technical team working on the website behind the scenes.

Version 2.0 of the Her Hoop Stats team has a wide range of backgrounds and experience. Some of us are old enough to remember the ABL while others are current college students. Some are long-time women’s basketball fans while others (including me) are relatively new to the women’s game. My hope is that those backgrounds will be complementary and we can cover women’s hoops from a wide range of angles.

I’m very excited about what we have in store for the WNBA season and beyond. There’s no question we’ll have growing pains as we get started. My invitation to you is to grow with us and help us get better each day.

Thanks,

Aaron
