WNBA Weekly Power Rankings
Week of July 8, 2019
This week’s rankings are coming to you a day late — thanks to my jet lag and some much-needed catching up on the WNBA after spending the last two weeks cheering on the U.S. Women’s National Team at the FIFA World Cup in France — but also includes an extra day of games. Tuesday afternoon, the Dallas Wings defeated the Los Angeles Sparks to pick up their fifth win of the season.
The past week has been exciting at the top of the rankings as well. Washington held on to the top spot this week, but another loss for the Connecticut Sun (this time at home) and two wins for the Aces and Lynx shook up the top spots yet again.
Here are this week’s rankings (movements from last week’s rankings are noted in parentheses):
1. Washington Mystics
Record: 9–4, Offensive Rating: 111.6, Defensive Rating: 97.0, Net Rating: 14.6
Despite falling to the Sparks on the road this week, Washington retains the top spot in our rankings. The Mystics currently have the best record, offensive rating and net rating in the league. Their defensive rating also falls in the top four, making the Mystics clearly look like the best team in the league on paper.
2. Las Vegas Aces (↑1)
Record: 9–5, Offensive Rating: 100.1, Defensive Rating: 92.4, Net Rating: 7.7
While the outcome of their Friday game against the Mystics is still to be determined after the game was suspended due to an earthquake, the Aces picked up two wins this week over the Sky and the Liberty. They held Chicago to 82 points and New York to 58, boosting them to the best defensive rating in the league. With an offensive rating among the top four, the Aces are starting to look like the team that was favored to win the title in the preseason.
3. Minnesota Lynx (↑3)
Record: 8–6, Offensive Rating: 100.5, Defensive Rating: 97.0, Net Rating: 3.5
The Lynx picked up two more wins last week, including an impressive one at Connecticut. A fourth quarter push and a career-type night from Odyssey Sims (21 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds) pushed Minnesota to victory over the Sun, making them the first team to beat Connecticut at home this season. They now sit at third in the league in both offensive and defensive rating and third in our power rankings.
4. Connecticut Sun (↓2)
Record: 9–5, Offensive Rating: 99.7, Defensive Rating: 98.4, Net Rating: 1.3
5. Seattle Storm (↓1)
Record: 8–8, Offensive Rating: 96.7, Defensive Rating: 95.7, Net Rating: 1.0
6. Los Angeles Sparks (↑1)
Record: 7–7, Offensive Rating: 99.0, Defensive Rating: 99.5, Net Rating: -0.5
7. Chicago Sky (↓2)
Record: 7–7, Offensive Rating: 98.1, Defensive Rating: 100.3, Net Rating: -2.2
8. Phoenix Mercury (↑1)
Record: 6–6, Offensive Rating: 98.4, Defensive Rating: 99.4, Net Rating: -1.0
9. Indiana Fever (↑2)
