“We should start a blog!”

It’s one of those things you and your old college friends say after a good night of partying. It’s one of those things that you kind of laugh off the next day as you brunch through your hangover. It’s definitely not one of those things that you expect to happen, but it did.

Six women living in four different cities took a drunk conversation and turned it into something real.

Here we are, nine months into 2018, with Her Outlette and intentions of being something more. To get here, we had to be honest with ourselves. We had to enter into this knowing that the blog space is already a crowded party. We had to drill down on how we wanted to be different.

In an effort to be different, we had to take a good look at ourselves. We’re black women living in a moment where we can finally control the narrative around who we are. So, who exactly are we?

Angry? Sometimes. Sassy? Possibly. Spokespeople for an entire race? Unintentionally. Doing it for The Culture? Always.

The narrative around black women, at the moment, is one-dimensional. We’re angry, sassy, twerking, Trump-hating, twistout rocking, face beating, lace front wearing, reality show watching, tea spilling, shade throwing creatures. But blackness isn’t sameness. Although we do, sometimes, embody the characteristics I just listed, there’s something missing when you look at how we’re being represented to the masses.

The six of us here at Her Outlette are members of the millennial generation. We’re the generation that’s so entitled, we decided not to accept things as they are. We created a new way to approach adult life, mainly because the adult life we were promised didn’t exist when became adults.

So here we are, six women looking to make some noise in this crowded party.

We’re consciously deciding not to accept who and what society is telling us we are. We’re asking you to listen as we bring multi-dimension back into the conversation around young black women. We’re asking you to watch as we show the sides you don’t often see. We’re asking you to join us as we dare to be ourselves.

Welcome to Her Outlette! Take a look around and feel free to lette it out.

XO, Jasmine
