Her Outlette’s Friday Roundup — 11.9.18

Things heated up this week as voters headed to the polls for midterm elections on Tuesday. Dems stepped it up and came through with guns blazing to flip historically Red states Blue, and won back control of the U.S. House (watch out Trump, Maxine Waters is coming for those tax returns). Yassss!

Stay woke on Georgia and Florida because it ain’t over; votes are still being counted for Abrams and Gillum is headed for a recount! But, as we sit back and anticipate the final results, there were so many victories to celebrate this week.

Let’s start with some girl power and how women showed up and showed out by electing 100 women into Congress. There’s a Democratic Congresswoman in Oklahoma, and an openly gay Governor of Colorado. Texas is sending its first two Latinas to Congress, and Massachusetts elected their first African American to Congress! Who runs the World!? Girls!

Let’s pump it up for the weekend as we continue to celebrate some of the many victories that have transpired throughout this week! This is America, and we still have to put in the work!

And don’t forget to check out some of the issues that mattered most to our viewers.

With love,

Shae

What’s on our minds…

Florida…

Delmarshae Walker: Amendment 4 in Florida just passed which will allow over 1.4 million former felons to vote. This is a major win for Florida!

Is It Girls Scout or Boy Scout?

Delmarshae Walker: Remember passing out cookies as a little girl or standing in front of Walmart with a huge smile on your face to greet customers and persuade them to help you hit your “cookie goals”. Well apparently Girls Scouts is suing Boy Souts over name and trademark infringement. Yikes!

Shots fired…

Kellé Whitney: Another day in America, and sadly another mass shooting. On Wednesday, at least 12 were killed as a gunman opened fire in a Thousand Oaks bar filled with college students. Nearly a dozen others were wounded and the gunman — a Marine combat veteran — is now dead. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victim and the survivors. And my side eye is HEAVILY on lawmakers who refuse to move forward with sensible gun laws. I mean…how many is too many America?

New flip phone, who dis?

Kellé Whitney: Samsung is taking it back! All the way back to the t9 autocorrect days, the days before touch screens and Facetime. I’m talking about flip phones, or in this case “foldable” phones. Samsung’s new foldable phone -which opens into a tablet- will be available in early 2019.

Hey Washington D.C. Marijuana is coming for you!

Monet Victoria: The legalization of marijuana in select states has created an issue for travelers. People are traveling and forgetting that marijuana is not legal everywhere. It’s time to just go on ahead and take this legislation D.C. TSA workers have even said that the pot smokers are mellow it’s more so the alcoholics that they struggle with. Go figure! Mo marijuana Mo mellow. Everyone wins!

What we’re reading…

Amy Poehler…

Meliabia: My book this week is →“Yes! Please” I remember Jasmine was reading this on a cruise we went on a while back. When I noticed it was on my Libby app at the public library I figured I would give it a shot. Amy takes you through all the twists and turns that got her where she is today. A lot of sarcasm and humor. I am cracking up reading this book! But she also instills in you to keep pushing through whatever obstacle may be in your way.

What we’re listening to…

Uncover…

Delmarshae Walker: Interested in investigative podcasts? I just started listening to episode 1 of Uncover this week which explores one woman’s escape from Keith Raniere’s NXIVM.

Cuffing Season” The Podcast

Meliabia: This is a super dope podcast about the millennial pathway towards love and marriage. You know those typical “the day I met you my life changed”… well there’s a podcast about just that and it’s debunking some of the theories about the path to get there. This first episode has me cracking up and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

What we’re laughing at…

Blackish

Rikkiej: I have fallen behind on this show, but it has yet to let me down. This is a great show for a family or just a young professional like myself with big family aspirations. The jokes just don’t stop.

White Girls want to be black….

Meliabia: This viral Facebook post has me cracking up where they took people’s past pictures and current pictures to show the way white women (in particular) tan, get hairstyles, and surgical procedures to look more like black women. They love our culture but hate us.

Parks and Rec predicted the future!

Monet Victoria: Parks and Rec is literally one of my absolute favorite shows. This article cracks me up because it resurfaced one of my favorite shows. An eighteen year old mayor was elected in Oregon. This screams Parks and Rec. I’ll be trolling the tweets.

What we’re doing this weekend…

Artpe Diem (DC!!!)….

Meliabia: Being in DC there’s ALWAYS something going on or else you just aren’t paying attention. @msryannkelly is putting on what should be a phenomenal creative event this weekend called Artpediem. This event will have live art shows, regular art shows, executive chefs, live music, spoken word. The works. The culture will be on full throttle this Saturday at Big Chief.

What’s in our shopping carts…

Flights

Rikkiej: Between Christmas and New Years all my coins are going towards airfare. Google Flights is my favorite search engine, but Hopper is my go to if I am trying to predict prices….now if only someone would tell southwest to get in line with the flight search site flow.
