Empowering Women for Success

By Sacha Walton, Business Strategist and CEO of SWI Management Group

Techina Jacques, Founder of Biz BuildHers

It’s Women’s Business Month, and I’m excited to take the opportunity to celebrate stories of everyday businesswomen making an impact in their communities.

According to the Small Business Association (SBA), “over 13 million women own businesses in the US.” Women are taking their place in society and scaling businesses with ideas, talents, passions, and skillsets while staying focused on legacy building. As a part of my efforts to honor this year’s Women’s Business, I’m celebrating by dedicating this month to elevating the voices and stories of inspiring women entrepreneurs.

Let’s lift up and applaud all the amazing, talented, and diverse women around the world who are making their voices heard.

Recently, I had a wonderful interview with the business owner, Techina Jacques, founder of Biz BuildHers.

Thank you for having this interview with me. I’m excited about sharing your story in our Biz Her Way Series for Women’s Business Month. Our readers would love to learn more about you. Please tell us who you are and a little something about yourself.

I am Techina Jacques, an award-nominated, multidimensional entrepreneur, published author, the visionary CEO behind Biz BuildHers, and domestic violence survivor on a mission to empower individuals to pursue their dreams relentlessly.

Born and raised in North Charleston, South Carolina, I witnessed the struggles of living in a low-income neighborhood. Despite the challenging environment, my parents made incredible sacrifices to ensure I wouldn’t become a statistic.

For that, I’m eternally grateful. I remember being a shy yet precocious child who loved to dream. I knew the world held more for me, and I worked tirelessly to achieve my goals.

My entrepreneurial spirit was ignited at a young age, juggling various side hustles as a teen and young adult.

At times, I’m astonished at how far I’ve come in this journey, evolving from selling snacks to neighborhood children to managing multiple businesses serving people and organizations worldwide.

As a passionate advocate for personal and professional growth, I earned my undergraduate degree in Political Science from Furman University.

My seven-year tenure in government provided valuable expertise in project management, community development, and public policy. Transitioning into the architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, I excelled as a Project Manager overseeing multimillion-dollar projects in various industries.

During this time, I obtained my Project Management Professional Certification, MBA, and Master’s degree in Management and Leadership, and completed other training and certifications.

Deeply committed to volunteer work and giving back to my community, I am fueled by the ultimate yet profound goal — to realize my own dreams and inspire others to do the same.

My journey serves as a testament to the power of dreams, resilience, and the joy of giving back. It’s a celebration of the unwavering human spirit. My hope is that my story inspires you to chase your dreams and empowers you to conquer any obstacle in your path.

Domestic Violence Survivor and CEO Techina Jacques

Everyone has a story behind the beginning of their business. Why did you start your business, write your book, be a creative, or speaker?

Starting my business was an endeavor born from a profound desire to infuse purpose, impact, and alignment with my values into my professional life.

As I embarked on my journey, I, like many others, pursued the elusive “American dream.” However, the pursuit of income alone left a void; I knew there had to be more.

I realized that true fulfillment comes from a deeper sense of purpose, the ability to make a meaningful impact, and a life that resonates with one’s core values.

My professional and entrepreneurial journey provides me with an intimate understanding of the unique challenges women face on their path to success, and I am deeply committed to addressing these challenges head-on.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I would like to share a personal journey that has shaped both my life and my business. As a survivor of both physical and emotional abuse, I know the tremendous strength it takes to break free from such circumstances.

My experience has given me a profound understanding of the significance of finding one’s voice and building confidence.

This burning desire led me to establish my latest company, Biz BuildHers, a consulting company for women entrepreneurs seeking not only the guidance and resources necessary to build profitable businesses but also the unwavering support that prevents them from feeling overwhelmed and isolated in their pursuit of success.

Through Biz BuildHers, I am dedicated to empowering women and providing them with the self-assuredness and resources they need to pursue their dreams, regardless of the challenges they’ve faced.

I’m determined to utilize my experiences to make a meaningful impact on the lives of women entrepreneurs.

In a world where silence often prevails, I stand as an example of how one’s voice and self-confidence can serve as the catalyst for transformation and success.

Which quotes or affirmations inspire you?

Daughter, one day, you’re going to travel the world and people are going to come to hear you speak. Don’t ever give up on your dreams. — My late mother, Vermell Jacques

Every woman’s success should be an inspiration to another. We’re strongest when we cheer each other on. — Serena Williams

One day she discovered that she was fierce, and strong, and full of fire, and that not even she could hold herself back because her passion burned brighter than her fears. — Mark Anthony

How are you making an impact with your business or project?

The impact we’re making extends far beyond individual success stories. By nurturing a community of women entrepreneurs who embody these values and break down barriers, we inspire others to do the same.

Our dedication to social impact means that our success stories reverberate through the community and create a ripple effect, leaving a lasting mark.

But what truly sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in every sense.

We don’t just empower women in business; we’re making a real, tangible difference in their lives and in the communities we serve.

It’s not just about achieving dreams; it’s about creating a new reality where women are at the forefront of entrepreneurship, all while staying true to the values of collaboration and innovation.

Through Biz BuildHers, I’ve found a powerful way to give back to the community, to uplift and inspire others, and to contribute to a more inclusive and empowered entrepreneurial landscape.

My story of resilience and determination fuels our mission and serves as a beacon of hope for those who aspire to make their dreams come true.

If you saw a woman struggling in business, what advice would you share with them?

I would encourage her to remember the “why” behind her business. This can provide her with the motivation and grounding needed to overcome any obstacles she might be encountering.

I would also emphasize the importance of setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals for her business.

Developing a well-defined roadmap with clear, achievable milestones can guide her toward success.

Last, but not least, I would stress the value of seeking mentorship, resources, and support when necessary. Entrepreneurship can be challenging, but there’s no need to struggle in silence.

Being open to guidance and assistance from others is a strength, not a weakness.
