Designers create ways to save coral and more–Herberger Institute highlights from November 2023

Design solutions for coral reefs

Thirty students in The Design School traveled to Hawaii this semester as part of a studio course to create new ways of saving the islands’ dying coral. The course is a partnership between The Design School and the College of Global Futures, and the transdisciplinary project included not just the various design specialties but also sustainability and biology.

Special Hunger Games prequel preview

Herberger Institute students had the opportunity to experience the new Hunger Games prequel, “Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” weeks ahead of its worldwide release in theaters, thanks to a relationship between The Sidney Poitier New American Film School and Lionsgate, the studio that produced the film.

‘My spirit was enlivened’

LaTasha Barnes, assistant professor in the School of Music, Dance and Theatre, shares how dance helped her recover from a car accident, the importance of linking and honoring the cannon of Black dance and culture, and the passion behind choreographing the award-winning “Jazz Continuum.”

Spotlight on giving

In November, Arizona State University celebrated Sun Devil Gratitude Week, a special time dedicated to honoring the generosity of donors who support our community’s growth and success. The Herberger Institute thanks all of the incredible donors who contribute their time, talent and resources to supporting our students, faculty, staff and the work done here. Donor contributions are pivotal. They’ve enabled students like Nicole Ponsart to deepen her study of ceramics as a graduate student in the School of Art.

Make a difference by giving to the Herberger Institute.

Earlier this month, the School of Art celebrated its student organizations and the ASU arts community at the annual ARTfest event. The community art fair brings together many different studio areas, including animation, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and more. Clubs demonstrated their artistic processes, handed out swag and sold some of their artwork.
