Disrupting design and the arts — Herberger Institute highlights from August 2019
Announcing the 2018–19 issue of Disrupt
As we launch into another academic year at Herberger Institute, take a look back at some of the remarkable accomplishments from last year, as showcased in the pages of Disrupt, Herberger Institute’s annual online publication.
Living laboratory
“We are almost a living laboratory. We can test strategies and see different ways to keep adapting and mitigating.”
School of Arts, Media and Engineering Assistant Professor Ariane Middel spoke with The New York Times about heat research in Phoenix as part of a look at how heat affects the city and activity during the night.
When the water runs dry
As the global water shortage crisis continues to raise questions about what communities will need to do to conserve the resource, a near-future fictional scenario experiment called Drylab2023 created by ASU faculty has now become a training scenario. Co-director Adriene Jenik, a professor of intermedia in the School of Art, shares what Drylab 2023 is all about and discusses the water crisis.
Spotlight on alumni
The Oaxaca FilmFest international film festival in Mexico has featured the work of Guillermo Del Toro, Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese. And now Martín González, who graduated with a degree in film and media production from the School of Film, Dance and Theatre in 2018, can add his name to that list. González recently announced that his short film “The (Dis)united States” is an official selection for the Oaxaca FilmFest, which has been praised by MovieMaker magazine as one of the top festivals in the world.
By the numbers
This month’s number is 1,000! From design and art exhibitions to recitals and concerts, from dance and theatre productions to film screenings and digital culture showcases, from student and faculty work to events with visiting artists and guest scholars, the Herberger Institute boasts more than 1,000 events — many of which are free. The 2019–20 season of events offers something for everyone.

We recently kicked off the semester and are thrilled to see our returning students and to welcome all of our new students. The Class of 2023 celebrated at the annual #SunDevilWelcome pep rally. Dean Tepper even made time to get a photo with a group of ASU community assistants.
