Spotlight on Los Angeles and more–Herberger Institute highlights from February 2024

Finding meaning in George Floyd’s death through art

“Twin Flames: The George Floyd Uprising from Minneapolis to Phoenix” exhibition at the ASU Art Museum features a vast selection of objects left at the Minneapolis intersection where George Floyd was murdered on May 25, 2020, which gave rise to the ongoing public memorial George Floyd Square in Minneapolis.

‘Mapping Blackness’

Carla LynDale Bishop, assistant professor in The Sidney Poitier New American Film School, debuted her new work preserving the stories of the historically Black Okemah community at a two-day Black History Month event in Mesa.

Celebrating jazz at The Nash

Faculty from the School of Music, Dance and Theatre explored how jazz is more than just a style of music during a panel discussion at The Nash Jazz Club in Phoenix. Panelists included faculty Christie Jay Wells, Joyce McCall, Corcoran Holt, LaTasha Barnes and musician Charles Lewis.

Spotlight on Los Angeles

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is hosting two signature events in Los Angeles in March. On March 16, our Los Angeles Open House at the ASU California Center showcases fashion, interdisciplinary design, film, and narrative and emerging media programs offered in LA from ASU FIDM, The Design School and The Sidney Poitier New American Film School. The event incudes tours, panels and a chance to hear from industry-connected faculty and alumni. Guests will also have the opportunity to visit ASU FIDM Museum’s “Art of Costume Design in Film” exhibition, which opens to the public March 5 and runs through April 20, 2024. This much anticipated show features costumes from a variety of films released in 2023, including all five Academy Award®-nominees for costume design: “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Napoleon” and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

By the numbers

This month’s number is 40! Forty Arizona-based ASU FIDM fashion students embarked on a trip from Phoenix to LA, stepping into the heart of the fashion world. From touring the ASU California Center to engaging with fashion’s archival treasures and receiving insights from fashion icon B. Åkerlund, a frequent collaborator with Beyoncé, Madonna and Lady Gaga, it was an immersive journey into the industry’s core.

“I would never have been able to experience something like this if it weren’t for ASU FIDM,” said ASU FIDM student Riley Kennedy. “I hope other students will also be given this opportunity in the future years to come.”
