The latest issue of DISRUPT is here–Herberger Institute highlights from December 2023
A look back
DISRUPT is the Herberger Institute’s annual online magazine — a look back at the year that was, plus some glimpses of things to come. We hope you enjoy it, and we hope your holidays are happy and healthy!
Fashion and engineering
ASU FIDM fashion students collaborated with engineering students to create clothes that integrate technology to help kids in chemotherapy. The project was a collaboration between the engineering course Embedded Systems Design, based at the Polytechnic campus, and the course Fashion Design and Wearable Technology.
Theatre and technology
Herberger Institute alum Daniel Brodie showcases his work in designing visual effects and scenes as the projection designer for the highly anticipated pre-Broadway production of “The Wiz,” which is on tour and set to make its way to ASU Gammage in January. Brodie graduated in 2006 with a degree in theater and media design, and his career reflects the synthesis of art and technology.
Art and basketball
Miguel Godoy, an instructor in the School of Art, designed El Valle NBA City Edition uniforms for the Phoenix Suns. The uniforms celebrate the Valley’s Mexican American culture with an “El Valle” wordmark on the front of the jersey and, on the side panels, decorative pinstriping designed to embody the hand-painted pinstripes of a lowrider.
Spotlight on XRts
In the new XR Mixtape series, presented by the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center, ASU XRts Immersive Media Fellow Sultan Sharrief takes you behind the scenes of the immersive industry to discover the latest XR trends, languages XR artists use to tell stories and how to apply these emerging technologies to social change. In the latest episode, Sultan experiences Dreamscape Learn and attends the kickoff for the Worlds for Change Challenge worldbuilding competition, where you can win a scholarship to attend an XRts graduate degree program and other cash prizes.
