Adlof Hitler’s Pencil for Sale.

Latest pointless distraction

Oh joy, another day, another bizarre artifact from history up for sale. This time, folks, we have a pencil. Not just any pencil, mind you, but one allegedly given by Eva Braun to Adolf Hitler on his 52nd birthday in 1941. Don’t ask me why a pencil; maybe she was out of ideas for presents, or maybe Hitler was really into stationery.

This little writing instrument, inscribed with ‘Eva’ and ‘AH’, which I assume stands for Adolf Hitler and not ‘After Hours’, could apparently fetch a whopping £80,000 at an auction in Belfast. That’s right, £80,000 for a pencil. What a world we live in, huh?

Now, let’s get a few things straight. Firstly, I have no idea if this pencil actually belonged to Hitler, and frankly, I don’t particularly care. What baffles me is why anyone would want to drop that amount of money on an old piece of wood and graphite.

If you think I sound a bit salty, you’re absolutely right. When the most fascinating news I have to write about is an 82-year-old pencil, I think a bit of cynicism is in order.

But hey, if you’re into weird memorabilia or if you’re a fan of expensive writing instruments, more power to you.

Lastly, if you happen to own a company and you want to see your product or press release featured in future ‘news’ stories, feel free to drop me a line, preferably attached to a fat cheque. Because, you know, it’s always more interesting to write about the latest gadget or fashion trend than century-old stationery.

Until the next riveting piece of historical trivia comes along, that’s all from me.
