In the bustling hallways of Kromrey Middle School in Middleton, students eagerly share stories and greetings with Principal Dom Ricks. Since 2019, Ricks, at 31, has led the school through unique educational and public health challenges, bringing a fresh perspective to the role. His appointment marked a historic moment as he became the first Black principal in the district, a role he views as a significant opportunity to be a role model for minority students.

Ricks’ office is a blend of personal and inspirational touches, featuring comic book art and a powerful painting gifted by a student reflecting on social justice issues. This painting, depicting protest signs among clouds with a poignant message on racial equality, holds a special place above his desk, symbolizing the school’s commitment to understanding and addressing social issues through education.

Before becoming a principal, Ricks’ journey was shaped by his experiences as a teacher in Baton Rouge and Verona, where he aimed to influence his students’ lives positively. His dedication to student welfare is evident in his interactions, emphasizing that his students’ well-being is his top priority. His path to education was influenced by his passion for spoken word poetry, guided by a supportive teacher who helped him secure a scholarship for his college education.

Ricks’ challenges, including family health and financial issues, underscore his resilience and determination to succeed despite obstacles. Excelling academically while facing adversity in his personal life, Ricks’ story is one of overcoming hardships through perseverance and the support of mentors. His educational journey led him to major in sociology and engage in acting, eventually leading him back to teaching and into educational leadership.

As principal, Ricks navigated the school through the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on re-engaging students with in-person learning experiences and addressing the isolation many faced. He introduced initiatives to ensure every student could connect with an adult mentor to support their emotional and academic growth. Ricks also confronts racial and political challenges head-on, advocating for equity and inclusivity in education and ensuring the school environment reflects values prioritizing students’ well-being and social justice.
