2) Meaning of Poem in English

This ghazal by Hafez delves into themes of love, fate, and the transient nature of life. He begins with a sense of losing control over his heart, symbolizing deep emotional vulnerability. The poem reflects on the ephemeral nature of worldly pleasures and the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones.

Hafez also emphasizes the value of kindness and tolerance, suggesting these virtues as keys to peace in both worlds. He challenges societal norms, embracing the joys and sorrows of life with equal fervor. The poet’s reference to Alexander’s mirror and the cup of wine symbolizes the reflective nature of life, where the highs and lows offer profound lessons.

3) English Translation and Transliteration

“My heart is slipping from my hands, O masters of the heart, to God.
Alas, the secret pain will soon become clear.

English Transliteration

Del miravad ze dastam saheb-delan khoda ra
Darda ke raz-e penhan khahad shod aashkara

We are the shipwrecked, O favorable wind, arise,
Perhaps we shall again see the face of the familiar.

English Transliteration

Keshti-e shekasteganim, ey baad-e sharteh barkhiz
Bashad ke bazbinim didar-e aashna ra

The affection of the heavens is a ten-day story, an illusion,
Value the chance of being with friends, my friend.

English Transliteration

Dah ruzeh mehr-e gardoon afsaneh ast o afsoon
Niki be jaye yaran forsate shomar yara

In the circle of flowers and friends, the nightingale sang last night,
‘Hat alsabuh hubbu ya ayuhas sakara.’

English Transliteration

Dar halgheh gol o mol khosh khand dosh bulbul
Haat al-subho hoboa ya ayyuha al-sokara

O noble one, as a token of gratitude for your well-being,
One day, visit the destitute dervish.

English Transliteration

Ey saheb-e keramat shokraneh salamat
Ruzi tafaghdani kon darvish-e bi-na ra

The comfort of both worlds is in understanding these two words:
Kindness to friends, tolerance towards enemies.

English Transliteration

Asayesh do giti tafsire in do harf ast
Ba dostan meravat ba doshmanan madara

In the street of good repute, they did not allow us passage,
If you do not approve, change fate.

English Transliteration

Dar koo-ye niknamy ma ra gozar nadadand
Gar to nemi-pasandi taghyir kon ghaza ra

That bitter substance that the Sufi calls ‘the mother of vices’,
Is more desirable and sweeter to us than a kiss from the chaste.

English Transliteration

An talkhosh ke soufi om-al-khabaithesh khand
Ashehi lana o ahlam men ghablel al-azara

In times of hardship, engage in pleasure and intoxication,
For this alchemy of existence makes a beggar of Qarun.

English Transliteration

Hangam-e tangdasti dar aysh kosh o masti
Kayn kimiya-ye hasti Qarun konad gada ra

Do not be so proud, lest like a candle, your jealousy burns you,
The beloved, in whose hand wax is as stone.

English Transliteration

Sarkash masho ke chon sham’ az gheyratet besozad
Delbar ke dar kaf-e ou mom ast sang-e khara

The mirror of Alexander is the cup of wine, look,
So it may show you the state of the world-conquering Dara.

English Transliteration

Ayineh-ye Sekandar jam-e may ast bengar
Ta bar to arzeh darad ahval-e mokhtara

The beautiful Persians say, life-givers are those who forgive,
Cupbearer, give the good news to the pious drunkards.

English Transliteration

Khooban-e Parsi goo bakhshandegan-e omrand
Saghi bedeh besharat randan-e parsa ra

Hafez, this wine-stained cloak was not chosen by himself,
O pure sheikh, excuse us.”

English Transliteration

Hafez be khod napooshid in kherqeh may alood
Ey sheikh-e pakdaman ma’zoor dar ma ra
