At Columbia Heights’ new spot Kookoo, guests are greeted with a unique appetizer platter of radish, walnut, feta, and parsley by owner Yahya Sardari. This gesture sets the tone for a homey Persian dining experience. Sardari, an Iranian restaurateur, transformed his previous coffee shop into Kookoo, aiming to serve the flavorful dishes of his heritage.

Sardari’s journey to the restaurant world was shaped by significant life events, including fleeing Iran during the 1979 Revolution and resettling in the U.S. He has worked in various hospitality roles before finally realizing his dream with Kookoo. This venture reflects his desire to share the Persian cuisine he loves, influenced by his mother and grandmother’s cooking.

Kookoo offers a menu that combines traditional Persian flavors, from savory kebabs to rich dips and classic rice dishes. The restaurant’s signature dishes, like the khoresh fesenjoon, showcase Sardari’s commitment to authentic, slow-cooked Persian meals. The careful selection of spices and ingredients, including saffron sourced from Iran, highlights the depth of Persian culinary traditions.

Aside from the food, Sardari has introduced Persian-inspired drinks to the menu, celebrating Iran’s rich cultural heritage. A special cocktail named Azadi, meaning “freedom” in Farsi, pays tribute to the women’s movement in Iran. Kookoo stands as a testament to Sardari’s journey and his dedication to bringing a piece of Iran to Columbia Heights, offering a cozy, authentic dining experience.
