Jiseon Lee Isbara will soon lead the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as its new president, chosen after a wide search. She’s making history as the first woman of color and the second woman to take this role in the school’s 158-year history. She will be the 16th president starting soon.

Lee Isbara comes from South Korea, bringing a unique view shaped by her country’s challenging past of wars and rapid changes. She values understanding different cultures and biases while raising a family with diverse backgrounds. Her art, shown worldwide, reflects her life as an immigrant and the colors of her experiences.

As the provost at Otis College of Art and Design, Lee Isbara helped the college grow and paid extra attention to students’ well-being and future careers. She’s known for making the college a place where everyone, regardless of background, feels welcome. Before that, she spent 16 years at Oregon College of Art and Craft, contributing to various leadership roles.

Lee Isbara has a solid education in art, with advanced degrees from Colorado State University and Ewha Womans University in Seoul. Her education and career show her deep commitment to the arts and education. The board chair of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago believes Lee Isbara will continue to build on the school’s prestigious reputation.

She takes over from Elissa Tenny, retiring after enhancing the school’s financial health and commitment to diversity. Tenny’s leadership saw significant improvements, including a substantial increase in the school’s endowment and efforts to create a more inclusive environment. Lee Isbara’s term starts on July 16, promising a new chapter for the school.
