Joe Sharp and Patty Tang launched Rasa Rasa, a cool new food truck, on March 5, 2020. They aimed to introduce San Francisco to Indonesian home cooking, such as laksa noodle soups and spicy sambals.

Just days after their debut, COVID-19 struck, shutting down food businesses for three months. Despite the challenge, Sharp and Tang didn’t give up. Exactly four years later, they launched Rasa Rasa Kitchen, a sit-down spot in the Mission.

Starting was tough, but by summer, business picked up. Rasa Rasa’s arrival is big for Indonesian cuisine fans, who had been obscured in the Bay Area. Their spicy shrimp laksa gained a loyal following, even getting recognition from the San Francisco Chronicle.

The restaurant serves family-style dishes like turmeric fried chicken and beef rendang. It’s adapted recipes for American tastes, toning down the spice levels. Open Tuesday through Sunday, it’s a hit with newcomers to Indonesian flavors.
