1. Mujadara

I absolutely love Arab cooking, especially the vegetarian dishes! Mujadara is a classic Arabic staple that you simply have to try. It’s made with lentils, rice, and caramelized onions, and it’s the definition of comfort food in any language. The first time I had it, I was really blown away by how flavorful and satisfying it was. The aromas alone had my mouth watering with anticipation!

I love that Mujadara is a simple dish with few ingredients, but the result is so delicious. And it’s certainly a budget-friendly option that’s perfect for vegans and vegetarians. I even made it for my meat-loving friends once, and they were impressed by how hearty and filling it was.

So, if you’re looking to try something new and tasty, give Mujadara a try — you won’t be disappointed!

2. Lentil Soup

I recently tried a delicious Arab-style Lentil Soup recipe that completely blew my socks off. Since I have so many vegetarian friends, I’m always on the lookout for hearty, flavorful plant-based meals, and this soup certainly delivered with it orange lentils, vegetables, rice, and a wonderful mix of spices.

The combination of earthy cumin, smoky paprika, and tangy lemon juice made for an incredibly satisfying and complex flavor profile. Plus, the addition of Arabic spices like sumac and za’atar gave it a unique twist that I had never tasted before. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to whip up this soup in just under an hour — it’s the perfect meal for a cozy night in or a quick weekday lunch.

I’m already thinking of new ways to switch it up and create my own spin on this tasty Arabic classic. Maybe you have some ideas of your own?!

3. Cauliflower Shawarma

Have you ever heard of Cauliflower Shawarma? This vegetarian version of shawarma was first introduced to me by my Arab friend a year or so ago. You might be aware that eating shawarma is very popular in Arabic culture, so I was definitely eager to learn about the vegetarian option of this staple. I am glad I did because I was really surprised by the bold flavors and textures of this vegetarian dish.

Are you aware of the cauliflower trend? Cauliflower pizza crust, cauliflower rice, cauliflower bread, cauliflower steaks, cauliflower buffalo pops, and the list goes on! People are substituting cauliflower for a lot of things!

Cauliflower Shawarma replaces the meat typically found in a shawarma with cauliflower florets that have been seasoned with spices and roasted until golden brown and tender. Then the warm wrap is filled with the florets, hummus, tahini, and a variety of roasted vegetables — it’s like a burst of Arabic flavors in every bite!

Whether you’re a vegetarian or just looking to switch up your regular meat-centric meals, Cauliflower Shawarma is worth trying. Plus, it’s a great way to sneak in your veggies for the day! Trust me, your taste buds will thank you for this one… really they will!

4. Koshari

Have you ever tried Koshari? As someone who loves Arab cuisine, I can tell you that this dish is a must-try. Originally from Egypt, Koshari is a vegetarian dish made up of lentils, chickpeas, rice, and macaroni or spaghetti, all topped off with crispy fried onions and a spicy tomato garlic sauce.

The first time I had Koshari, I was amazed by the mixture of flavors and textures that just melted in my mouth. The Arabic influence in the dish is unmistakable, and it’s clear to see why it has become such a beloved dish in the region. Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, Koshari is definitely worth trying at least once!

5. Lebanese Moussaka

As someone who loves exploring cuisines from around the world, I discovered Lebanese Moussaka a few years ago and let’s just say, it’s out of this world!

This vegetarian version of the famous meat-laden Greek dish is made with eggplant, chickpeas, onions, and tomatoes and seasoned to perfection with a blend of spices. Every time I took a bite, I couldn’t help but appreciate the rich Middle Eastern flavors that hit my taste buds. Not only is it delicious, but it’s also a great option for vegetarians or anyone looking for a healthy, meat-free meal.

I highly recommend giving it a try whether you’re a fan of Arab cuisine or not. It’s a culinary experience you won’t regret.

6. Falafel Pita

If you’ve never had a Falafel Pita, you’re missing out on something delicious. It’s one of my favorite vegetarian options and I’m excited to share it with you.

Originating in the Arab world, specifically Egypt and Palestine, falafel is a delicious and savory doughnut-shaped ball made from ground chickpeas and spices. It’s then stuffed into a warm and fluffy Arabic pita bread, topped with fresh veggies like lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes, and drizzled with some creamy tahini sauce. It’s absolutely mouthwatering!

What I love about a Falafel Pita is how customizable it is, you can add any toppings you like or switch up the sauce to make it your own. It’s a perfect on-the-go meal that’s filling, flavorful, and vegetarian-friendly!

7. Shakshouka

Have you ever tried Shakshouka? Originally from Arab and North African countries, mainly Arabic-speaking ones, Shakshouka is a delicious and savory vegetarian dish.

The base is a mixture of tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, and spices seasoned to perfection. Then, eggs are poached in the mixture until they’re set to your preference. I love to scoop up the warm, runny yolk with a slice of crusty bread. Shakshouka is the perfect combination of sweet and savory, and the spices add a depth of flavor that I just can’t get enough of!

8. Fattoush Salad

Originating from the Arab world, Fattoush Salad was first served in Lebanon and Syria. What makes this salad unique is the combination of fresh vegetables, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and radishes, with the crunch of crispy toasted Arabic pita bread. The dressing is simple yet delicious — olive oil, lemon juice, and sumac spice are combined to create a tangy and refreshing flavor.

This salad is not only healthy but also satisfying, and it’s perfect as a light lunch or as a side dish to a larger meal. It’s really easy to make so go ahead and make a big Fattoush Salad for your next party and impress your guests with the bright and colorful presentation!

9. Fatayer Jebneh

Fatayer Jebneh is a delicious Arab pastry stuffed with cheese (jebneh means cheese in Arabic). Normally the cheeses used for this pastry include akkawi and kashkaval, but if you can’t find them, you can substitute any salty cheese like feta.

Fatayer Jebneh is one of my absolute favorites when I am looking for a vegetarian snack. The dough is perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the cheese filling is just ooey-gooey perfection.

I love to grab one of these for a quick snack on the go, or even as part of a bigger meal. They’re great at parties too because they’re small and easy to eat with your hands.

If you’re ever in an Arab restaurant or bakery, be sure to ask for Fatayer Jebneh — you won’t regret it!

10. Zaatar Manakeesh

I had never had Zaatar Manakeesh until a few weeks ago when a friend of mine took me to an Arab bakery in his hometown. Apparently, so I quickly discovered, it’s a staple in Arabic cuisine that I was definitely missing out on!

For those who don’t know, Zaatar Manakeesh is a type of flatbread covered in a blend of zaatar (a combination of thyme, sumac, and sesame seeds), olive oil, and sometimes cheese. The nutty and slightly tangy flavor of the zaatar mixed with the chewiness of the soft manakeesh made it satisfyingly delicious.

It was so good that I decided to order some more while I was there and took them home with me to share with my family–they loved them too!
