UT Southwestern Appoints First Black Medical Staff President
James Griffin, born at Parkland Memorial Hospital, is now its first Black president of the medical staff. He’s a faculty member at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
With about 2,300 students, the medical school has a 5% Black student population. Dr. Griffin has been with the center since 1990 and has held various leadership roles.
Currently a Distinguished Teaching Professor, Dr. Griffin specializes in non-narcotic pain medication and robotic surgery anesthesia. He’s also involved in national medical associations.
He’s held roles like director of medical student education and chief of anesthesia services at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Dr. Griffin received medical training from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
