Go on, treat yourself…

We all love to treat ourselves every now and then, whether it’s splurging on that new dress we’ve seen in our favourite store or on a cup of coffee in the morning — it makes us feel good! But what if over time, these little treats add up to a serious hole in our bank account?

We might not think about it in the moment but making smart financial decisions really is the sum of all the little purchases we make along the way. That’s not to say that we should stop treating ourselves completely because let’s face it, we deserve a little something on occasion with all the hard work we put in!

But what motivates us to part with our hard-earned cash for things we could probably do without? Research shows that our mood — good and bad — plays a huge role in influencing our behaviour when it comes to impulse buying. That’s why, when we’re having a particularly stressful day, we might find ourselves splurging on a new lipstick that we probably didn’t need, despite trying to save for a rainy day. Or, when we’re in a particularly bouncy mood, we’ll happily fork out a bit extra at a restaurant or in a store in a bid to sustain that happy feeling for longer.

The trick to controlling impulsive treating is being mindful of how happy or stressed we’re feeling in the moment. When we feel calm and centred (and not overly exuberant or stressed), we are better able to make sensible financial decisions based on need, rather than emotions.

One way of doing this is to have the data you need to make spending decisions at your fingertips. Too often our moods win out over our sensible selves, because we are in the dark about the overall picture of our finances. If we have better access to this important information, we are better positioned to make smart financial decisions.
