From a young age, Margaret Whigham enjoyed the company of males. In 1928, when she was 15, she had a passionate affair with 18-year-old David Niven. The future Oscar winner seemed to be as in love with the young woman as she was with him.

When her parents found out, they were livid. Their little girl was pregnant with an American man’s baby, and the pair had no intentions of getting married. Margaret was brought to a London nursing home, where she had a secret abortion.

Margaret continued to adore David for the rest of her life for her part. Though numerous reports stated that they did not speak again after the abortion.

Her parents were intent on marrying Margaret off before she could become a wild child. She was presented at court in 1930 and was quickly named debutante of the year.

It didn’t take long before she announced her engagement to Charles Greville, 7th Earl of Warwick. However, she was not interested in marrying him. Margaret said she found the Earl to be dull.

She had eyes for an American heir and amateur golfer, Charles Sweeny.
